Time to start Worrying?
Both Crystal Palace and Newcastle United have had up and down seasons. At times, there's been talk of qualifying for Europe but that ugly word relegation might have to be used soon. Palace are 14th in the Premier League, a place and a point behind opponents Newcastle United. The Londoners are six points clear of the bottom three but that gap is a narrowing one.
Palace are yet to win a game this year and have lost their last three league games. They have been on a poor run for some time now with just one win in their last 11 league fixtures. That was a home win over struggling West Ham and back on Boxing Day. They had been picking up points though thanks to a series of draws. Six out of eight Premier League fixtures had been drawn before these recent losses and another this weekend can't be ruled out.
Games against sides such as Brighton and Norwich should have been won though. Their last three games have seen Southampton, Sheffield United and Everton beat them with Palace scoring just once. The only good news there was that the goal came from Christian Benteke, just his fifth in three seasons.
Scoring has been a problem for Palace with only 23 league goals, the lowest total in the Premier League. Anyone expecting a high scoring game this weekend may be left wanting. Newcastle have just 24 league goals to their name. Also, take into account the fact the last six meetings between these sides have only produced six goals.
Home form for Palace is poor with only four wins and ten goals. Only two of their last nine home Premier League games have been won. 18 of their 26 league fixures have had under 2.5 goals scored in them and a staggering 11 out of 13 at home! After this game, Palace have away games at Brighton and Bournemouth and home game against Watford. They need to get some wins to stay out of trouble.
United Slipping Down Table
Newcastle United have had their moments this season but are still only seven points above the relegation zone. They suffered a heavy 4-0 loss at Arsenal last weekend and have two points from their last three league games.
They too are having problems scoring in the Premier League with none in the last two. Just one of their last eight league games have been won since beating Palace 1-0 at home just before Christmas. Away form continues to be a worry for Steve Bruce. Newcastle have just two points from their last five on the road. Three away league games have been won but eight have ended in defeat with just 12 goals scored.
The promise shown when earning 10 points from five games in November and December is slowly slipping away. Another loss this weekend could see the teams below them closing that seven point gap. With two of their last three games being against Spurs and Liverpool, the more points earned now the better.
Both teams are struggling for wins at present. The draws have been coming though, so a bet on a draw with under 2.5 goals scored in them is suggested.
