Consistency Needed and Quick
Both of these clubs are doing well in cup competitions but there is still a lot of work to be done in the Premier League. Aston Villa have a Carabao Cup final to look forward too but the prospect of an immediate return to the Championship is still a distinct possibility. Tottenham have the FA Cup and Champions League on the horizon but it's a top four finish they want and that's not certain to happen this season.
Villa are only a place and a point above the relegation zone. They lack consistency and the last 12 league games have only produced three victories. Wins against top sides in the Premier League aren't that regular an occurance. Two of their recent victories have come against bottom-of-the-table Norwich City and another relegation zone occuptant, Watford.
A form guide for the last ten league games has Villa in 16th with ten points earned. They are doing just enough to keep them out of trouble but would do a lot better if not conceding so many goals. In their last 12 league fixtures, only Norwich City have failed to score against them.
Home form has seen them win two of their last three in the Premier League. If they can maintain that kind of form, then Premier League survival is on the cards. Those two wins though were against sides in the bottom three. This game against Tottenham is followed by trips to Southampton and Leicester and a home game against Chelsea, not the easiest of fixtures.
Away Form still a Problem for Tottenham
There are some big cup games on the way for Tottenham but a top four finish in the Premier League has to be their main aim. That new stadium of there's wasn't built to host Europa League games. Failure to secure another top four finish would be a step backwards for the London club.
They start the weekend in sixth place and four points behind Chelsea. A win here and failure by Chelsea to beat Manchester United on Monday would be the perfect weekend for them. Tottenham have seven points from their last three league games but two of those were played at home. Wins came against Norwich and Manchester City but they could only draw at Watford.
It's their away form that is causing them problems. They have only the 14th best away record in the Premier League. Only two away games have been won by them in the league this season. Those came at West Ham and Wolves, both achieved since Jose Mourinho became their boss.
Five points have been earned from their last five away league matches. Their next one after this trip to Villa Park is an away match at Chelsea. They need the gap between them and Frank Lampard's side to be as narrow as possible before that showdown.
Tottenham have failed to score in their last two away league games at Southampton and Watford. Up against a Villa defence that struggles to keep clean sheets, they have to be favoured to get at least one goal in this game. Consistency isn't something these two sides know a massive amount about. Nine out of the last 12 Tottenham away games have had over 2.5 goals scored in them, so that's another bet to consider. A draw with both teams scoring is a likely winner.
