An Unexpected Opportunity
With just 24 minutes left of their game at Reading on Wednesday, Swansea City looked to be missing out on the play-offs. They were drawing 1-1, while Nottingham Forest had the same score at home to Stoke City. Swansea didn;t just need to win, they had to see Forest lose and make up the goal difference deficit. Incredibly, Forest went on to lose 4-1 and Swansea won by the same scoreline. Against all the odds, the Welsh side finished sixth in the table and went into the play-offs.
Swansea ended the regular season in good form. Only one of their last seven games were lost and that was to champions Leeds United. Home form has been patchy though with only two wins from the last five played. They only scored in two of their last five home league fixtures. Four of those matches have had under 2.5 goals scored in them, a bet you should definitely be considering for this play-off semi-final first leg.
The Welsh side will be hoping for much better results in this two-legged game than in the regular season. They lost 3-0 at home to Brentford and 3-1 in the reverse fixture. Swansea have won ten home league games this season. Only four teams scored less home league goals than Swansea but only six conceded fewer than them.
Their confidence must have been given a great boost by the events of Wednesday evening. Their season looked over and now they have a chance of returning to the Premier League. Even better, there's the prospect of an-all Welsh play-off final against Cardiff City.
Pick Yourself Up Time
While Swansea City unexpectedly find themselves in the play-offs, Brentford have to put a major disappointment behind them. After West Bromwich Albion lost at Huddersfield Town last Friday, they were on the verge of making it into the Premier League for the first time. With a superior goal difference, four points from two games against sides battling relegation was all that they needed.
Brentford fans were starting to make plans for life in the Premier League but those celebrations are definitely on hold. They lost to both Stoke City and Barnsley to finish third, two points behind West Brom. Just winning one of those last two games would have seen them earn automatic promotion.
It wasn't to be and now they have to pick themselves up again and try to win the play-offs. Brentford's confidence will have been hit badly by the events of the past few days. They had won eight successive league games before losing those two final games.
Brentford's away form cost them automatic promotion. They lost nine away league matches but ended the season with three wins in a row before that defeat at Stoke City. Only two goals were conceded in their final four away league games with eight scored by themselves. With those two wins over Swansea already this season, Brentford have no reason to be scared of this trip to Wales. They have a second chance at promotion and it's one they will be determined to take. A win for them with under 2.5 goals in the match looks a bet that can be a winner.
