Just Where is the Consistency?
Consistency is something that most clubs in the Championship are continually searching for. Going into the midweek fixtures, only Leeds and Barnsley have won both of their last two league games. The fact one is in the top two and the other the bottom three says it all.
Fulham and Swansea have both been blowing hot and cold throughout the season. The home side in this game fit perfectly into that category. At times, they have gone on good runs that look like seeing them challenge for the top two and a return to the Premier League. Then, their good form deserts them and they are in danger of dropping out of the play-off places.
Current form is again worrying for Fulham with only two points from their last three league games. The gap between them and second placed Leeds United has again widened and is now five points. Their last home game was a disastrous 3-0 defeat by relegation-threatened Barnsley. They have home games against Swansea and Preston this week, at least four points is the order of the day.
10 of their home league games have been won this season. However, five have ended in defeat and that consistency problem is again evident. The last four at Craven Cottage have produced two wins and two defeats. What makes it worse is the fact those two losses have come against sides in the bottom half of the table. How can you beat Leeds one minute and lose to Barnsley the next?
In a league that is difficult to guess what will happen next, goals do look likely in this match. 10 of the last 12 Fulham home league games have had over 2.5 goals scored in them. The main question that Fulham fans have is will it be us scoring the goals or the opposition? The away side has scored at least twice in eight Fulham home league fixtures this season.
Still a Chance for Swansea
Swansea started the midweek games in ninth place but are still in with a shout of promotion back to the Premier League. They are five points adrift of the final promotion play-off position but just six behind third placed Fulham. A run of two or three wins would totally turn their season around.
They will need a big improvement in form though. The weekend saw Swansea beat Huddersfield 3-1 at home but that ended a run of five league games without a win. Three of those matches had ended in draws but this is a tight league. Sometimes a draw almost feels like a defeat or a missed opportunity to make up points on other struggling sides.
Keeping clean sheets might help Swansea in their promotion bid. They have only kept one in their last seven league fixtures. Four of the last five have seen both teams score with three of the last four having over 2.5 goals scored in them. Away form has seen them only lose three times in the Championship this season. Eight have ended in draws though.
Both sides need points from this game. Fulham have the attack to cause their opponents plenty of problems. That was shown in the reverse fixture when two Mitrovic goals gave Fulham a 2-1 win. Fulham can be unpredictable at home but a win with over 2.5 goals scored looks likely here.
