One Last Chance for the Bees
There are times when a bad run of form comes along at the worst possible moment. That's the situation Brentford find themselves in at present. Three defeats in a row have been suffered and now comes one last chance for them to stay in the Championship promotion race. They host Swansea City in the semi-final second leg, trailing 1-0 from the first leg.
Brentford had won eight straight games and automatic promotion was a strong possibility. Just two points from their final couple of fixtures would have seen them promoted to the Premier League. Both were against sides struggling to avoid relegation but Brentford lost to Stoke City and then Barnsley. Into the play-offs they went and the first leg away to Swansea looked as if it was heading for a welcome goalless draw.
Nine minutes from time, Swansea took the lead and held onto it for a 1-0 win. Another blow for Brentford was the sending off of defender Rico Henry who will miss this second leg. Brentford were the top goalscorers in the Championship with 80 goals, 44 of them at home. They will need to rediscover their scoring touch with only one goal scored in the last three matches.
Top scorer Ollie Watkins hasn't scored in the last three games. Said Benrahma hit six goals in three matches earlier this month but none in the four that have followed. They must be due a goal and bets on them to score in this match could well be winners.
Five home league games in a row had been won with only one goal conceded before that loss to Barnsley. There have been over 2.5 goals scored in five of their last seven home matches, a stat that may well come up in this game.
One Game Away from Wembley
While Brentford were confident of automatic promotion, Swansea City struggled to make the play-offs. Brentford have seen their form dip, Swansea have been getting results just at the right time. They won their last two league games and thanks to Nottingham Forest imploding on the last day, the Welsh side squeezed into sixth place.
Now they have to make the most of that and go into this second leg 1-0 up. Their dream of a Wembley final may well be achieved. Their last eight games have only seen one loss, that was to champions Leeds United.
Some teams have struggled since the season resumed but not Swansea. Their problems all took place before lockdown. They won only one out of nine matches and slipped out of the top ten. Would that form have been turned around if the season had continued?
Away form isn't too much of a worry for Swansea with only one defeat in the last nine matches. Eight of those games saw them score a goal (possible final opponents Fulham kept them out) and both teams scored in seven. A bet on both Swansea and Brentford scoring in this match looks a likely winner. Further supporting evidence is the lack of away clean sheets that Swansea keep. Three were kept in their first four away leagues games but only three in the next 19.
Swansea are the form side going into this game. A double chance bet on them looks a decent one to make as they bid to make it all the way to the play-off final.
